The 2016 edition of Major League Soccer is here, as all 20 teams are in action on opening day, and the Los Angeles Galaxy will get a chance to clear out the 4-0 CONCACAF Champions League thrashing by hosting DC United in Carson, Saturday evening with a 7:00 PM local kick-off.
Fizzling out last season, Bruce Arena went with a rehaul of sorts, bringing in experienced (old) veterans while sending out main stays in Juninho and Omar Gonzales. Nine additions including Ashley Cole, Nigel De Jong, Dan Kennedy, Jelle Van Damme while bringing back Mike Magee, once a fan favorite.
Quest for the franchises sixth MLS Cup will rely on how well those coming in from Europe will adjust, as Steven Gerrard showed last season it isn't an easy transition. The time zones, long flights, climate differences, style of play, among other reasons, could make the hyped additions of Cole, De Jong and van Damme fizzle out.
This'll be the lone meeting between the two sides this season, as was the case last year when DC United took all three points away thanks to an extra time finish by Chris Pontius at RFK Stadium.
Galaxy lead the All-Time series with 19 wins, to United's 14 while the sides finished with nine draws. At home, the Galaxy have 10 victories to United's five with five draws. The last United victory in Carson came in 2005, and since, the Galaxy have been undefeated in eight meetings.
Projected XIs: Galaxy(4-4-2): Kennedy; Rogers, DeLaGarza, Van Damme, Cole; dos Santos, De Jong, Gerrard, Lletget; Zardes, Keane D.C. United(4-4-2): Dykstra; Kemp, Boswell, Birnbaum, Franklin; Vincent, Sarvas, DeLeon, Nyarko; Rolfe, Espindola
Prediction: Galaxy win 3-1 behind a brace by Keane while Zardes adds the other tally. Nyarko gets the tally for United.
